A Helpful Guide to Healthy Eating
If you have decided that you need to make some changes to promote healthy eating habits, you may be feeling a little confused. Where do you even begin? How do you know you are making the right decisions? This first thing you need to understand is that healthy eating is not about depriving yourself. It’s about allowing yourself to be as healthy as possible so you have more energy, look better and feel great.
Making these changes doesn’t only entail evaluating the foods you eat in your diet; it includes taking a look at your eating habits as well.
Start with Small Changes
You don’t have to throw away every food in your home that contains carbohydrates and vow to only eat protein and vegetables. All you are doing is setting yourself up for failure, because once the excitement wears off, you are basically just on an ultra-boring diet.
Start with small changes like using olive oil instead of butter, choosing an apple instead of chips or opting for oatmeal and a banana for breakfast rather than cereal. Understand that every single healthy choice you make improves your diet. These all add up. If you are like most, you may not even realize just how many unhealthy choices you make in one day.
Eat Often
Forget the three-square-meals-a-day rule you probably grew up believing was so good for you. When you eat three larger meals, there is a chance that some of those calories you don’t need right away get stored in fat cells. Not to mention, this method starts and stops your metabolism several times a day.
Ideally, you will eat five or six small healthy meals. This way, your metabolism is constantly working, you are supplying your body with food for energy nonstop and you never have the opportunity to get super hungry, so you don’t overeat.
Let Yourself Cheat
Moderation is key when it comes to healthy eating. If you are craving something sweet, indulge in a smaller piece of dark chocolate. If you are out to dinner and there’s homemade, soft, warm bread, go ahead and have a small piece so you stop obsessing over it. Eat it slow and enjoy every bite. Otherwise, you are more likely to reach for a fattening snack later because you’re dwelling on it. Air-popped popcorn is always handy to have made if you are someone who craves junk food.
Fill Up on Fruits and Vegetables
Colorful fruits and vegetables are not only good for you, they are filling too. They are jam-packed full of nutrients, low in calories and generally have a high fiber content.
Your salads don’t have to be made with boring lettuce, add kale, Chinese cabbage and mustard greens. If you are having hard time giving up candy and pastries, opt for sweet potatoes, corn, berries, mangoes and oranges.
The Carbohydrate Dilemma
Don’t listen to people telling you that you can’t eat carbohydrates. You can eat carbs; they just need to be the right ones. Healthy carbohydrates include whole grains, fruits, vegetables and beans. Bad carbohydrates that you need to stay away from are foods made with white flour, white rice and refined sugar.
Remember, healthy eating doesn’t have to happen overnight. The more healthy decisions you make, the better you will feel. This in return will inspire you to do everything you can, to become healthier overall.
